We are Linux! 17 Sept 2007

theobroma's picture

On September 17th 1991 the Linux kernel was uploaded for the first time. To commemorate and promote this historic event we are calling on every Linux enthusiast to show the world that... We Are Linux! The name was inspired by a video created for the Tux500 project. Thanks Bob.
Here is what you need to do. Get something that has Linux or Tux on it a shirt, a button, a sticker, anything you can wear out in the public. On September 17 2007 wear it all day long. If you really want to go all out burn some of your favorite liveCD distros to CDR brand them and hand them out to any who asks you what Linux is. Or we could talk to some if the suppliers of the cheap GNU/Linux CD suppliers to see if we could get a deal or something. This way the CD's we hand out are very professional looking and not the product of a sharpy© pen. ;)

What we need to make this a reality.

  • Website badges to promote the project.
  • Sub domain for the website
  • Inexpensive Products
    • Buttons
    • Stickers
    • Shirts
    • Mugs
  • CD artwork for the Do it yourselfer
  • Contact some of the inexpesive GNU/Linux cd suppliers to see if we can get bulk discount on a one time purchase that is going to be shipped to various addresses.
  • Find out if any of the inexpensive GNU/Linux CD companies would be willing to trade banner ad space.
  • Please add to this list in your comments!

What do you think?
Do you want to help out?

Heads up for Software Freedom Day (Sept 15th)

September 17th is significant for Linux. I notice also that September 15th (2007) is Software Freedom Day.

Is this the same?

Regarding the "We Are Linux" proposal (which I think is a good one), there's a group/organization organizing an international Software Freedom Day 2007 on Sept. 16, and folks in our neck of the woods (and I do mean "woods" because we're in the Santa Cruz Mountains) have signed on to it.

I think the site is softwarefreedomday.org, but I'd have to check (also, I tried it just now and it isn't working, but I'm pretty sure that's the site).

I'm all for wearing/displaying/promoting GNU/Linux at every turn, and will do so on the 16th and the 17th. After all, I think "We Are Linux" every day, and every day is Software Freedom Day so let me know what I can do to help promote "We Are Linux."

"Everyday is Linux day"...

Linux Day was not originally associated with the Freedom day but it is a similar concept. Their website is up again. I was thinking that we should go ahead with Linux Day on the 17th but after reviewing their website perhaps we should just endorse what they are doing. We are still in the process of setting up shop here and do not have the resources just yet to put something together on such a large scale as they have achieved. What do you all think? Should we still pursue Linux Day as a non distro specific campaign or should we just fold our effort into freedom day?

Check it out

Sept 15-17 = Linux Weekend?

I vote for joining our effort with that of Software Freedom Day 2007 on Saturday, Sept. 15. I have to temper my vote with the fact that I signed up to work with them to organize an event in our area, and we already have gotten a space, have five computers (six if you count a laptop, all belonging to me) to demonstrate distros and FOSS software and we have at least one speaker invited to talk about FOSS and why it matters. They've also made up a pretty good CD, which I think you can now download from their site. So they've done a lot of work that we'd be redoubling if we started our own event.

But, on the other hand . . .

For those so inclined (raising my hand here), it wouldn't be so bad to promote our giveaway event at this event -- with our event being over the weekend on Sunday or on the "real" birthday on Monday.

EU ruling date: coincidence?

>> A European court confirmed on Tuesday that it will rule on September 17 on whether software giant Microsoft broke European Union antitrust regulations.
>> .. September 17, the final working day before the retirement of Bo Vesterdorf, the court president and case judge.

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6197070.html

This may forshadow either something good or something bad .. or it may just be coincidence.

All the more reason to have a party then. If good, we double the celebration. If bad, we can drink our sorrows away (j/k).

Ooops. We have two Sept 17ths.

It seems there are two (maybe more) forum topics that deal with Tux's birthday in September: "TUX WEB WIDE FOR ONE DAY!" and "We are Linux! 17 Sept 2007." Maybe TUX WEB.. was not intended to be about Sept 17 but a number of comments there are about Sept 17. Should we relocate those or...

One possible way to divide the forum discussions relating to Sept 17 could be:
-- Events for Sept 17
-- Events leading to Sept 17

We grouped together....

...three popular projects to make up one working group so that we could focus all of our energy into our first annual Linux Day!

Groups, forums, book outlines, and a test

Are groups clusterings of forum topics, such that if you click on a group, you are presented with the intro/link to the forums that comprise it?

If so, that is useful. Now who can create a group? Also, who cleans up after stale topics, groups, etc. Wouldn't the namespace get really crowded if everything is left behind. And who lays out the structure of the forums (the hierarchial category headings)?

And what is that book outline thing?

Finally, (and this will be an exercise) I replied within a particular forum. Is there a way to move this reply to a different more relevant forum (eg, some Q&A/Faq forum) in a more sophisticated fashion than copy/paste?

Maybe I'm just tired. I created some forum topics yet forgot all about the group choices.

Groups are created by someone with superuser powers! (but that can change right?)

When mere mortals create a forum topic, they decide what groups to belong to.

And this can be edited later.

Navigating/clicking on a group shows all the forum topics whose creators chose to make a member of that group.

At the moment...

... it is just the site admins that are able to do a lot of what you are asking about. We set it up this way so that we could start it out as simple as possible with the ability to change it when needed. I will be addressing these points you have brought up soon.

this is a really awesome

this is a really awesome idea... and by coming up with this logo and merchandise... we have things to distribute at any event we want to target (conferences, events were marketing in, etc.)

kick-@$$ idea

OK...we will highly publicize this date. Here is the hook. ON THIS DAY...If you are a Linux User AND you can be identified as one by any garment/cap you wear, a member of the TuxTeam if he spots you, will hand you a:

*usb drive (will need about 50 of them) possibly with a linux distro already on it. DSL, Puppy, Nimblex (especially nimblex)
*cheezy mouse pad
*Tux hat/tshirt/live distro of choice upgrade mailed to you 4 times a year
*Nothing - just get your picture taken with the TuxTeam member for publication on website.

Of course, we will have to have volunteers around the world act as TuxTeam Members for the day.

I am NOT a crook...or a verbal plagiarist - helios

GREAT IDEA!

www.mindblowingidea.com

The main problem with the bootable USBs is that most people won't know how to reset their bios to boot from them. But we could give out a live CD and on the top it could have the instructions to set it to boot from CD first printed. I will do it for my area. I will even put an add in the paper telling people that if they can find me walking around town they will get a free USB drive. Of course I need the USB drives first.

Which leads us back to....

A logo for The Tux Project! I pitty da fool who doesn't use Linux! haha

Why don't we try to get the

Why don't we try to get the Ubuntu/Kubuntu ShipIT project to send us Free CD's to hand out. I know not everyone wants to use Ubuntu but any way we can get the name Linux out and people to use it, the better. And they already ship free CD's nationwide.....

Who knows if we get Canonical Ltd and Dell, Novell and other companies  involved and get special promotions for that day that would make it even better. What we need are big companies that create and develop linux or sell stuff for Linux to get involved in offering promotions for that day.

If you really want it to hit Big also try to push for some advertisements on Local radio stations for Sept 17. Try to get something published in Linux Magazines.

Just my $0.02, let me know what you think.

Great ideas

Yes Ubuntu family cds would be one option for sure. I am almost thinking that it would be a good idea for the people who are handing out the CDs be familiar with the distro they are providing. This way they may be available to offer local support. This could even potentially lead to them being able to charge for their services as Linux consultants. (but that is another subject.)

As for including the various Linux "corporations I agree that we should invite them to take part. Whether they want to pool resources with The Tux Project or run with our idea on their own either way it is very welcome. It would be great if they would work with us though.

We will create and send professional literature packs out to all of the potential corporations for profit or not that might be interested.

As for radio commercials I agree whole heartedly if not this year next year for sure. The Linux magazines is a must we need to prepare press releases for the various e-zines and published mags to use. This goes for any other media that we can afford to reach.

Potentially we could use the spotlight that FOSS and more specifically Linux has experienced recently by making Linux Day as widespread as possible. This way we are able to turn the negative momentum into a positive movement. From there it could grow we could even bill it as a type of freedom day for computers world wide.

"Give you computers a break let them drink from the cool waters of freedom! Let them bask in the oasis that is FOSS!" Laughing

"Save your computers from the landfill." Come to think of it we should setup another project that dove tails with Earth day!

In the near future we will be creating a task list for this project that enable members to be able to volunteer for. This feature will be available to all projects that we work on together here. We will be adding your ideas to that task list. If you have any more ideas please add them to this forum. Smile

Once we have a lot of materials completed we will be a ble to reuse them. So if you are starting to write a press release please do not add information that will date it if at all possible.
